BEST DAY SPA: La Cantera at the Westin

Spectacular massage. Beautiful space. Worth spending a little extra. Take it out of the stepmom budget.

BEST COMFORT FOOD: Liberty Bar

The historic and cozy Liberty Bar serves a hearty meal, but steer clear if you’re prone to vertigo. If dizzy spells aren’t your thing, look for the crooked building and order something comforting. I understand the pot roast and chocolate cake will put you in a delightful coma.

BEST TRUE MARGARITA: La Fogata

Local Leah says, “This is the place to get solid margaritas and enjoy a restaurant that’s been around for a long time.” Grab your oldest girlfriend and get a sunny table on the patio. After the first cool sip, start exchanging stories.

BEST DAYTIME OUTING: El Marcado

Leah says this is a Must Do. “Ride the trolley cars downtown, end up at El Mercado for
some authentic shopping, eat at Mi Tierra (be sure to finish the meal with a homemade praline), and after the meal walk across the street to the park and digest.” Sounds like a lovely afternoon.

BEST DANCING: The Bonham Exchange

I’m told this is the place to let it all hang loose and dance the night away; but don’t be surprised, it’s a gay club. But honestly ladies, this might be the most fun you’ve had in a while. Get fabulous and get down.

BEST DINNER WITH YOUR MAN: The Silo

Take a night off from preparing family dinner and go out as a couple. Silo features an extensive wine list, local art and gourmet food. If I were going tonight, I’d order the grilled and braised Kurabota pork shank on green chile orzo“Mac & Cheese” with ancho chile-dried cherry sauce and queso fresco. Holy shit fire! That sounds good.

BEST PLACE TO TAKE A WALK: San Antonio Botanical Gardens

Take your stress on a walk through this beautiful garden of native plants and flowers. Breathe in the air and the beauty and put your day in perspective.

BEST CULTURE: The McNay Art Museum

Take an hour to explore the current show. Find a color that takes your breath away or an angle that astounds you. Bring your stepkid(s) on another afternoon and introduce them to the art that moves you. Let them find their own favorites.

BEST OVERNIGHT STAY: Saint Anthony

The Husband and I stayed in this historic hotel for New Years Eve. Full of grandeur and old-time swank. Great downtown location.
