Book Club: Live Author Chats

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

landpark_ladies Book Club Ladies,

Do you have a book club in Central Texas? If your book club selects my memoir, The Package Deal: My (not-so) Glamorous Transition from Single Gal to Instant Mom as your next book club pick, I’m more than happy to attend your meeting, mix and mingle, and answer any questions you have about the book.

If you live elsewhere in the country, I’m available for over-the-phone chats. To schedule a face-to-face visit or an author call, email me at izzyrose@stepmothersmilk.com with the following info:

• Number of members in your book club
• Where you’re located
• Contact email and/or phone number
• When you plan to read/meet to discuss TPD

You can also set up a meeting or call through Readers Circle, a super cool (and legit) organization that connects book clubs and authors throughout the country.

I met recently with a book club in Austin and it was loads of fun. They pumped me full of wine, passed around an obscenely large bowl of queso and grilled me with questions. (Wine and cheese are not requirements BTW, although I’m easily won over with either or both.) Everyone was good-humored and no one tried to make me cry.

What’s more, after we drained the first glass of wine, the conversation became less about me and more about them. They started sharing their stories, opening up and swapping advice, which is really the whole point of the book. I was able to sit back, relax and listen to a wise group of gals discuss their careers, their different parenting styles, the secret to making good girlfriends, and how far they were willing to go for love.

Sound fun? I’m currently scheduling vis-a-vis meetings and author chats in November and December . Let me know if you’d like me to add your group to the list!

Parenting Advice: So Sexy So Soon

Monday, October 12th, 2009

so_sexy_so_soon_

If, like me, you think today’s teenagers are oversexed and desensitized, this week’s talk with Diane E. Levin, Ph.D, may answer some of your more pressing questions, like… why does my teenage stepdaughter think it acceptable to dress like a hoochie and pack heat in her lunch bag?

Summit Series for Families has put together a pretty awesome online event bringing together parents, educators and teenagers to discuss issues that affect our families. They’ve invited eight authors to talk about their books and are opening up the lines for live calls and will also be taking questions by email.

Tuesday October 13, 2009 8:00 PM EST

Diane E. Levin, Ph.D., is a professor of education at Wheelock College in Boston. She is an internationally recognized expert on how violent and sexualized media and commercial culture affect young children and what professionals and parents can do about it. She has also done extensive work on how to deal with the impact of violence and war on children. Levin is co-founder of the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood and Teachers Resisting Unhealthy Children’s Entertainment.

So Sexy So Soon is an invaluable and practical guide for parents who are fed up, confused, and even scared by what their kids–or their kids’ friends–do and say. Diane E. Levin, Ph.D., and Jean Kilbourne, Ed.D., internationally recognized experts in early childhood development and the impact of the media on children and teens, understand that saying no to commercial culture–TV, movies, toys, Internet access, and video games–isn’t a realistic or viable option for most families. Instead, they offer parents essential, age-appropriate strategies to counter the assault.

Diane E. Levin, Ph. D. is the author of eight books including So Sexy So Soon: The New Sexualized Childhood and What Parents Can Do to Protect Their Kids; The War Play Dilemma; Teaching Young Children to Violent Times; Remote Control Childhood?; and, From Conflict to Peace Building: Lessons from early Childhood Programs throughout the World.

This event is free! Just join the www.summitseriesforfamilies.com community and they’ll send you their updated schedule, dial-in information, and instructions for submitting questions to the authors in advance.

Enjoy!

The Package Deal Book Tour- West Coast

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

Here are some pics the Husband took of the California part of The Package Deal Book Tour.

I had a reading Tuesday night (5/5) in San Francisco at Book Passage in the Ferry Building and various TV interviews on KPIX CBS5 and KFTY-TV and KRCB FM.

On Wednesday, I read at Copperfield’s Books in Santa Rosa. My mother Susan Swartz, author, radio personality and former Press Democrat columnist, conducted the Q and A. I was thrilled to see so many people come out for the event.

IN TEXAS…
KEYE TV in Austin did a great story on Blended Families last night as well. Judy Maggio came and interviewed us at our house. Take a look. Part two of this series airs tonight (May 6).
