This took me back. When my stepkids reached driving age, I couldn’t sign them up because I wasn’t their REAL mom. Real dad had to take a day off from work to go to DMV. Small steps…

Another mom chiming in here to say I can’t remember the correct years either! I always have to go back and calculate based on the year I got married, which was “even” (2000), add one, then add four to that. Pretty pathetic…. : )

As for your fears that anyone else in line was judging you, I bet they were actually thinking, “How cool is that? His stepmom is signing him up!”

Oh, this made me laugh! I have been there, filling out forms at school, only to suddenly realize that I have no idea what year they were born. A voice in my head said, “Put on your poker face! Otherwise you’ll get busted for being a non-mom. You can figure this out – once upon a time you took algebra and stuff. Worst case scenario there’s a calculator on your cell phone.” Then, when I did the math (which was actually very challenging – no, you are not the only one that can’t do it in a pinch) and realized both girls were born after Y2K… well, all my friends were born in either the 60s or 70s, and a long time ago I used to babysit humans born in the 80s – I just hadn’t realized people had birth years that started with the number 2. It was weird.

On a side note – I went to the older one’s parent teacher conference last week, where she proudly explained the various math equations she had been working on in class. Instead of the poker face I was wearing the I-have-no-idea-what-you’re-talking-about-but-I’ll-smile-as-if-I-do face. Yep, it turns out I cannot currently comprehend second grade math. Guess we better start saving money for math tutors… for me. :)

I’ve been there, too (doing math with someone to figure out their birth years when trying to fill out forms). I still have to do math to figure out what year our kids were born in! And I love them very much.

Sweetie, I am his mother and I still can’t remember which child was born in which year… let alone which birthday or name goes with which child. Trust me… you’re a rockin’ stepmom.

Thanks for making me laugh. I went through this so much and finally had to memorize birth years. Have fun with the driving, the only thing I have found it did was drive me nuts! :-)
