I’m a Stepmom, not a Doormat

Ladies, I really love this quote…

“As Stepmoms, we should remember

That in order to be walked on,

We have to be lying down.

It’s our choice.”

LOVE it. My girl calls me “Michelle,” because of something her Mom said to her a couple of years ago. Entirely another story. BUT, when we are talking about her Mom and me it is usually the “Real Mom” and the “Other Mom.” I like Second Mom Better. It’s so accepting and supportive and loving. Lovely.

I let the kids call me what they like except for calling me by my first name. They’re were young when they joined us (3,4,5) because I am the mother figure of our house and we’re the primary custodians. To make it easier I suggested Mama Sara to appease their biological mom but, since we brought the children into our home during their formative years, its usually Mom, Mommy, Momma or a drawn out Mom…ma Sara for our oldest son whose just started the second grade.

i have a step son who is 12 now. I met his dad when he was 18 months and we have been together ever since. Since day one, he was taught to call me by my first name, which has lead to several funny and sometimes embarrassing situations. However, now my own children 6 and 4, typically call me by my first name. At first I thought nothing of it, but now I am starting to regret it and sometimes feel it allows all three kids to think of me less than a “mom”. My husband thinks I am insane. Am I??
