Tori Spelling- You’re not my mother!

I routinely search the Web for stories on other stepmoms, so naturally I came across this recent factoid. Tori Spelling is hoping to play a stepmom on the Beverly Hills 90210 remake show. Check it out…

“Well, I am a mom now, proud to say, but obviously too young to have a teenager, so maybe I could be one of the main character’s young stepmom,” says Spelling, who is expecting her second child. “Playing the funny sex ed teacher at the high school would be funny, too, considering Donna Martin was America’s most infamous virgin.”

I’m not crazy about this news. If we’re finally going to have a hip and relevant steplady in prime time, then Hollywood needs to cast someone, well, hip and relevant. Someone we can relate to, who hasn’t been chiseled away by a team of plastic surgeons, or the subject of nasty family feuding as publicized in our favorite gossip rags.

I know I’m not alone when I say that Donna Martin was one of my least favorite characters on the show. My reason is nothing more substantial than—she bugged. She was always whining about something, usually about how she was a virgin. Just give it up already and stop complaining! Given her background, I think it’s only natural for me to assume that she will take on another wimpy role on the remake of 90210. This time, as America’s most tormented stepmom. Or the naive new wife who tries too hard to force a sugary sweet bond with the kids—You can call me Mom. Let’s scrapbook!

These images do not help us. If we want to dispel the myth that stepmoms are unbecoming characters, Tori Spelling is not our leading lady.

But, maybe Im being too hard on poor Donna. Maybe my memory of her is off. In an effort to be fair, I did some research. I went down to Waterloo Video and hunted around for some old episodes of Beverly Hills 90210. I returned home with a sampling, including the pilot episode. I popped that one in the DVD player first.

Wow. Talk about some laugh out loud entertainment. Just the clothes alone are worth the rental. Leggings under shorts. Tanks tucked into pleated jeans—was this really acceptable at one time? Ladies, should you be craving one simple hour of comedic escape—I highly recommend a trip back to West Beverly High.

I ripped through about five episodes and I really couldn’t find much to either confirm nor deny my not so favorable opinion of Donna. The girl didn’t have a whole lot of lines, except for when she was pouting over losing her so-called virginity. What I did take away was this: Can someone please explain to me why we need to remake this show in the first place?

I’m all for REAL roles for stepmoms in the mass media but I agree with Izzy… ’she’ needs to be a bit more believable than the character Ms Spelling would portray. We are a smart and savvy bunch- us stepmoms - we need someone with chops like Kate Blanchett representing our tribe.

I think it gets worse, because Tori Spelling’s husband also had a wife and two kids when he met Tori. (This wife is a writer and wrote an essay about being thrown over for Tori Spelling, how completely unreal the experience was.) Thus, Tori actually IS a stepmom (interesting that she doesn’t mention this, eh?). In any case, the nuance and complexities of blended families deserves representation by someone who can offer nuance and complexity.

Oh, Izzy! You make me laugh aloud. ;) I like Tori Spelling in an “it’s funny to watch her bitch and moan on Inn Love” kind of way, but I don’t have the utmost confidence that she would be able to play a good role of stepmom on television. And, oh no no! So Vee says Tori actually is a stepmom, no? Hmm…just what we need-someone that doesn’t acknowledge being a stepmom in real life playing a stepmom on television….perfect.

Wait a minute– she IS a stepmom? And she’s keeping it a dirty little secret? Shame on you, Tori.

I’m probably one a few who liked Donna, I more-so like the David-Donna thing than her alone, but still a fan. I don’t however see her as a good stepmom character. I think she would be more of the lets be friends, I need you to like me type…which, I don’t believe is our role in a child’s life…step or not.

And besides, how is she going to become a stepmom? Illegitimate child that David just finds out about, or are they getting divorced & she remarried?

Okay, I’ll admit, I watched the show a lot…I still do when I get some time for guilty pleasures and it’s showing on the SoapNet!! I have no shame…I’m addicted to 90210 and The OC!

As far as why they are remaking it. Probably because they think it will get the same draw as it did in its prime. They will be disappointed.

And I had no idea she was a stepmom, she should be proud of that!!

Izzy Rose, you are hysterical and very clever. Only you could manage to pull in Tori Spelling and 90210 into your stepmom blog and make it work (and make me laugh). Thanks for the continued words of wisdom and entertainment.

What do you girls think of Kate Winslet playing a step mom? I’d like that. And I’ll have no part in this 90210 remake. It was a silly show to begin with!

YEsssss! I love Kate Winslet. Now, she’s someone I’d love to be compared to.

I’d love to see Sandra Bullock play a stepmom. She’s already a stepmom to Jesse James’ 3 kids, and according to an article I just read, ‘Bullocks says of Chandler, 12, Jesse Jr, 9 and Sunny, 3: “My love and my hopes for their future and their happiness…are no less than if they were my own biological children. I have my family, and it’s the family that some higher power put in my path. I feel really lucky.” ‘

Or Joely Fisher, who also has personal experience in the stepmom role. Both she and Sandra seem like “real” down-to-earth women who would be easy to relate to, or even sit down and have friendly chat with.

Wow…I love that quote from Sandra Bullock…that is awesome! I feel the same way about my soon-to-be stepson! When my soon-to-be hubby and his son came into my life, I felt like it was a gift from God…like a family that was hand-picked just for me. I know, that probably sounds corny! I think Sandra Bullock could pull of the role in a great way…she has such a great ability of portraying her characters in such a real way…I get choked up every time I watch 28 Days!
